Vision

A university of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability – where you become the thinker, the leader, and the person you’ve always known you are destined to be.

Rationale

Since the introduction of Free Primary Education (FPE) in 2003, there has been an increased demand for more opportunities in higher education. Out all the students that get admission to colleges, 60,000 plus miss university entry each year. Thus, thousands of bright students who make up a critical segment of society fail to acquire the necessary skills to succeed in life. This lack of opportunities in institutions of higher education denies the young people knowledge and skills that will help them improve their well being and that of their communities. This leads to perpetuating the circle of poverty in the country. Kenya continues to rely on foreign universities to absorb over 40,000 high school graduates, and many of them do not come back after completion of their studies. The foregoing observations and numbers will be dwarfed given the tremendous increase in the population of students seeking university entrance due to free secondary education the government announced a few years ago. In addition to brain drain, Kenya is deprived over $312m annually that is paid to foreign colleges for education. There is therefore an urgent need to establish additional higher educational opportunities in order to limit or stem the migration of Kenyans who study and work in foreign countries.

The expansion of higher education can no longer be left to the government efforts alone. Therefore, individuals or collective strategy from members of society is critical in establishing institutions of higher learning that will cater to their appropriate needs in all spheres of life. University of Maragoli, a university focused on entrepreneurship and sustainability will play an important role in providing knowledge as a driving force of personal progress, economic growth and poverty reduction. University of Maragoli will address the practical approaches to boost development and as a vehicle for change and innovation through the transfer of relevant technology. It will work closely with the public, government and the industry to boost sustainable economic growth through research and training of innovators as well as entrepreneurs. It will distinguish itself from the rest as a university that trains independent thinkers who will define Africa’s problems and develop appropriate and sustainable solutions for the continent.
