Scott Jiusto, PhD

University of Maragoli
Advisory Board

sjiusto@wpi.edu

Dr. Jiusto is a resource geographer with a PhD from Clark University with interests in environmental policy and philosophy, particularly energy policy and the pursuit of sustainability at sub-national scales. Research themes include assessing the politics of energy policy across multiple geographic scales (state, local and international), carbon emissions analysis, electrical power sector restructuring, and the management and manipulation of scientific uncertainty in the production of environmental knowledge and environmental policy. Dr. Jiusto has recently begun extending these interests to consider how city agencies, NGOs and academic programs can address issues of sustainable community development in informal settlements, particularly in Cape Town, South Africa.

These sustainability-related interests intersect with his teaching responsibilities in WPI’s Global Studies Program and a complementary research agenda that concerns the role of experiential, “project-based” approaches to educating students to effectively address challenges of sustainable development. Jiusto's role as Director of the new WPI Cape Town Project Centre provides an opportunity to extend and more closely integrate his research on sustainability and undergraduate, experiential education.
